Bye Bye 2017, Hello 2018!

For some, 2018 is here. For me 2017 is almost over, while for others 2017 will last a little longer. Regardless a New Year is upon us.

I was going to provide a Top 5 or Top 10 blog entries of 2017, but I am not quite sure what criteria to use! None received any comments. Sure, I could consult Google Analytics; but how many were hits generated from actual readers? Furthermore, timing is everything. Some entries received more attention than others due to luck of the draw.

A couple that I will highlight was the two that pertained to the old Fox Kids (Spider-Man, Spider-Man Unlimited, X-Men) shows plus Iron Man Armored Avenger and X-Men Evolution and whether they were leaving Hulu or not. As fate would have it, those vintage Marvel cartoons only remained for a month longer than when notice was originally given. Since that time, it was announce Disney would buy a ton of Fox properties including an additional 30% stake in Hulu. So will those cartoons return to Hulu, be reserved for the Disney's announced streaming service, or both? Guess time will tell.

A New Year means New Year's Resolutions! Here are 10 comic strips from GoComics concerning the annual promises! You can read them here.

Those strips basically sum up my approach to New Year's Resolutions this year. So you failed your 2017 resolution didn't you, Matt? Sigh, I didn't read anywhere as much as I intended to read when I made that resolution. Old new habits are hard to break.

So I wouldn't call these New Years Resolutions per se as they're mainly things I want to do but I won't cry if I don't.

  1. Read more. Yes, yes, that was last year's resolution. Some folks pledge to exercise, I plan to read more.
  2. Read more comic strips. A little more redundant but I consider reading strips very light pleasure reading, which I've ignored because I've been reading news instead.
  3. GoComics and DailyInk - Signed up for premium membership of GoComics about a month ago. Just have to get back into the habit of reading the strips. As for DailyInk (King Features Sydicate's version of GoComics), I plan on subscribing tomorrow. Yep, as of January 1st, I will finally get a subscription. May even cover the Amazing Spider-Man newspaper strip.
  4. Watch Royal Rumble and WrestleMania. Missed last years. Would like to see this years. Still up in the air about subscribing to the WWE Network though...
  5. A Britbox account - going through some British TV and Doctor Who withdrawal. However, it is another streaming service. So who knows? Okay, that is rather punny.
  6. Learn how to include cover images on this blog. Since I've taken the plunge and started inserted videos, there's no reason not to include cover images for any comic book reviews I may do. Just need to learn how...
So that's my obligatory New Years post.

Happy New Year 2018!

Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging: Watched Some Star Wars on Christmas Day

Before I begin, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

Took Christmas Eve off from blogging and considered doing the same for Christmas Day. However, I ended up by doing do something blog-related and that was watch some Star Wars I never watched before!

Now I didn't consider what I watched as a waste of time although I felt it inconsequential. Nor did I feel it was an affront to all things Star Wars. Pretty much something I would only watch once a year for the holidays.

No I am not talking Last Jedi nor the prequels. 'Holiday' is a clue.

If you guessed the Star Wars Holiday Special, you guessed right!

For those, like me, who had never seen the Star Wars Holiday Special it is available online such as Youtube.

Heck, for easy viewing if you have a little more than 90 minutes to watch the only Star Wars Holiday Special here it is:

There is a higher video quality version available to but this is the version that came up when I performed a quick search.

I can now cross the Star Wars Holiday Special off my Star Wars bucket list. While I appreciate the attempt to flesh out a galaxy far, far away, I am rather glad it's not canonical. Does contain the first appearance of Boba Fett and worth watching for that reason alone.

Think I am ready to see The Last Jedi soon now...

Since the holiday season lasts longer than today as the Christmas season doesn't end until January 6th, I may very well continue my Not Quite 12 Days until either the 6th or I hit the twelfth installment. However, I'll reserve such distinction for X-Mas or Star Wars related fare. Will be just another blog entry otherwise.

Happy Holidays!

Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging: My Decision on Digital Palladium Christmas Surprise Package

Time for my fifth installment of my Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging. Not going to do a song format this time as it really doesn't apply. If you haven't read the previous entries, here are: Day One, Day Two, Day Three, and Day Four. Today's entry concerns my decision regarding Palladium Book's first ever Digital Christmas Surprise Package.

If you didn't see an earlier entry I made this month, the digital surprise package is submitting a wish list of Palladium Book RPG sourcebooks available as PDFs (and maybe EPUB too) on Drive Thru RPG. The surprise package would be a great way for me to get books I already own in print form. Plus, for games I don't actively play, I'm moving toward digital books as opposed to physical ones. So unless the book is extra spiffy, digital is my preferred.

Well, the deadline for the digital surprise package is midnight the 24th. So time zone-wise, you may still have time.

As I blog this, I am mere minutes away.

Unfortunately, I have not ordered anything from Palladium Books in years. During that time, they changed their storefront. While my log in works for the megaversal forums, it does not for the storefront. I don't know if they have an old email address or if I would need to recreate my account from scratch.

I am not troubling myself to create an account - complete with mailing address - for digital books. I already have an account with Drive Thru. If I could fill out a wish list through Drive Thru, I would be regaling you all with my wish list right now.

Therefore, I won't be participating in the first Digital Christmas Surprise Package from Palladium Books this year. I am actually flummoxed.

Suppose I shouldn't have waited until the very last hour before trying my old account.

That being said, I may very well order a traditional surprise package with the new year. I consider that worthy of creating a new account.

So maybe next year I will participate in the second.

Regardless, Happy Gaming!

Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging: Six Christmas and Winter Solstice Links

On the first day of my Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging, I gave to thee one Superman/Batman Advent Calendar. On the second day of my Not quite 12 Days of Blogging, I gave to thee my 5 takeaways from my final Shadowrun Missions session. You: Uh, Matt, the song doesn't go like that... Me: I am not following the numerical order of the song? You:.... On the third day of my Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging, I gave to thee three Star Wars Radio Plays! Me: Happy now?

And...

On the fourth day of my Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging, I gave to thee... six Christmas and Winter Solstice/Yule related links! Me: Take that proper countdown of the song!

Today, December 21st marks the Winter Solstice, which many cultures celebrate including the holiday know as Yule.

Time Magazine published an article (so no clue how long this will be freely available...) on how four distinct cultures celebrate the winter solstice. They are the Krampus run in Austria, the Newgrange lottery in Ireland, fruit baths of Japan, and at Stonehenge. You can read it here.

Puzzled by the Newgrange tomb and its connection to the Winter Solstice? Fret not, National Geographic published a lengthy piece on megaliths and solstices. Here is the link.

Now on the Christmas-related links!

Here is twenty, yes 20, Peanuts Christmas comic strips courtesy of GoComics. Time for some comic strip content albeit via a link on this blog!

I love reading how different cultures spend the holidays. For example, here is how modern-day Icelanders celebrate Christmas from Christmas Eve to the Feast of the Epiphany.

Speaking of other cultures, Poland has not one, not two, but six Santa-type figures! You can read about the six different gift-givers and 16,000+ ways a Polish child can, or not if deemed naughty, by read this article.

What better way to conclude this collection of Christmas and Winter Solstice links than one that examines where Santa is buried! Okay, okay. Not Santa. The man who inspired the character, Saint Nicholas. Rather, where is bones may be scattered across the globe. You can read the National Geographic article here.

Happy Winter Solstice!

Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging: All 3 Star Wars Radio Dramas for OT are Online!

On the third day of my Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging I give to thee, three Star Wars radio dramas! If I had a time machine, I wish I could go back to yesterday a couple hours sooner when I made my discovery on Youtube. Now, I had been meaning to include a Star Wars post among my Not Quite series since we can pretty much expect a new Star Wars movie every holiday season. I got busy and the next thing I knew it The Last Jedi was out... and reactions were... polarized. My original intent yesterday was to do a Star Wars themed blog entry. All the mixed reactions to the latest Star Wars movie made me... less enthused to blog about Star Wars.

So I decided to spend time on Youtube. After all, decent internet is available to me. Again. Why not browse Youtube. Then after midnight this morning, I stumbled upon my discovery.

The Star Wars Radio Dramas for the Original Trilogy are available on Youtube. Some are whole. Others are split into installments. For fans of the Original Trilogy whom are feeling let down from The Last Jedi, here's a taste of yesteryear when Han shot first.

For the uninitiated National Public Radio (NPR) produced two Radio Dramas for the first two Star Wars movies, Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. Star Wars produced back in 1981 was noteworthy as it included many scenes cut out of A New Hope. During the 90's, transcripts were released in book format for both Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back Radio Plays.

While no radio plays were produced for Return of the Jedi during the 80's. I distinctly remember listening to an audio recording of the film as a kid. Guess, a private company later produced a radio version during the 90s.

Here's the all three radio plays in the their full form. You may want to use these a basis for your own forays on Youtube to listen to these Original Trilogy Radio Plays at your leisure.

Star Wars 1981

Has walloping run time of 4:55:53 so you'll probably want to plan of several intermissions!

Empire Strikes Back 1983

Not quite as long. Only a run time of 3:35:26...

Return of the Jedi 1996

Hey this one has a run time of 2 hours and 55 minutes! It could be a very long movie today!

Happy listening and may the force be with you!

Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging: 5 Takeaways from Final Shadowrun Missions Event of 2017

Took yesterday off from blogging but I am back for the second installment of my Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging. Today's won't be Christmas-themed but I never said every post would fit the Yule mold. Tonight, we played our final session of Shadowrun (5E) Missions at my FLCGS. Time for another segment of 'Five Takeways'. Both the first and last for Shadowrun Missions (SRM) during 2017.

  • SRM Street cred assisted item availability assumes long-term play - Through the grapevine, I heard the new SRM arc after the Chicago arc will lead to players starting over with new PCs to play non-prime runner modules. However, if you peruse the FAQ, PC can use their adjusted Street Cred to reduce the Availability rating of items. Street Cred mechanic already mandates the PC has been around for a while as it's base equals total karma divided by ten. SRM's adjusted Street Cred used for item purposes rule divides that result by another ten. We're talking runners with total karma in the hundreds here. Prime runners in fact. Going into today's session, I was going to use Nox's Street Cred to reduce the availability of Illusion Spell Formula then buy hits to simplify purchase. Upon discovering the math wouldn't be as simple as I thought, I abandoned the idea.

  • Straight Combat PCs suck at non-combat modules - Today's module was pretty much a non-combat module. The parameters of the run were such that any combat would ultimately lead to failure. Both my combat mage and the drone/wheels/decker-assister rigger didn't contribute much...

  • Binding Your 1st Spirit in Missions Feels Special - If you've read the rules for binding in Shadowrun 5th Edition, Binding is difficult for PCs well-skilled in it. My combat mage began the Missions with no skill in Binding whatsoever. Going into this session, I finally improved Nox's Binding skill to 5. Before the start of the module, I attempted Nox's very 1st Binding test. He succeeded  Binding a Force 6 spirit. With 4 net hits too!

  • Using Spirits in Creative Ways is pretty fun! - Speaking of Nox binding his first spirit, he actually used the spirit this very session. Remember how I said it was a non-combat mod? The spirit wasn't used in a manner where die rolls were needed. Rather intuitively obvious manner too using the elemental's create element power too but one I would never think to do if combat was the option. Other buying a couple minor items that other PCs used to dramatic effect, this was Nox's major and virtually sole contribution to the success of the run during this session.

  • A more liberal use of buying hits would have sped up play considerably - Buying hits is basically dividing a PCs dice pool by 4 to acquire one hit. Doing so foregoes dice-rolling speeds up play. Previous SRM sessions generally lasted quite awhile. Ironically, our final SRM session of 2017 was placed under a serious time constraint compared to previous sessions. Plus, we had a late arrival whom required debriefing. Towards the end, the GM started allowing buying hits, which the sped the game up during crunch time. Think our sessions would proceed much faster if our group incorporated buying hits more. Although I suppose less poker face with challenge difficulties would encourage buying hits more often too...
May blog the session recap before the end of the year; but more likely it will come next year.

Happy Gaming!

Not Quite 12 Days of Blogging: The Batman (and Superman) Advent Calendar!

Originally, I wasn't going to do a "12ish Days of Blogging" this year as my intent was to blog almost daily. Yeah, that didn't happen. Then I saw author Paul Cornel resumed his annual 12 Days of Blogging. Well, Christmas is less than twelve days away so I really can't do a twelve days of blogging nor do I necessarily want to blog every day. Instead, I'll endeavor to blog every day until Christmas but I am not guaranteeing it. Ergo, the Not-Quite-12 Days of Blogging.

Last year, the column Comics Should be Good on Comic Book Resources did a daily advent calendar counting down Superman Christmas stories. This year, the advent calendar centers on Batman.

My intent was to include a link per each day but then I decided to link to the advent calendar as a whole. Guess what? If you scroll down, the Superman Advent Calendar from last year is available too!

So not only can countdown Batman Christmas stories, you can do Superman stories too! Just save the later days when the Batman Advent Calendar catches up.

Here is the CSBG Advent Calendar.

Hmm, I should read some Christmas comics....

Happy Reading!

SRM: Oops, I Bungled The Karma for Nuyen Rule Once

On Monday, my FLCGS will host the final Shadowrun (5E) Missions (SRM) organized play event of the year. In preparation, I need to update my PC's character sheet and timeline. Easy, right?

As it turns out, I forgot there's a cap on the Karma for Nuyen rule (working for the people). Which is kind of bad as it throws off total karma, nuyen, and timeline. In SRM, we track the PCs time each week. In a roundabout fashion of course.

After verifying, I had only over-paid for 5 karma over the course of previous modules.

This last module, we only earned 5 karma.

Fortunately, I only need to spend one week of the PC's calendar to rectify the PC, Nox my human combat mage, having 5 more karma than he should. Been managing a huge karma reserve so no hiccups on the advancement end.

Downside, Nox is now an unplanned week ahead on downtime and lifestyle costs. Sigh.

Happy Gaming.

5 Takeaways From Final D&D 5E AL Session of 2017

Monday, December 11th holds the honor of being the final Dungeons & Dragons 5E Adventurers League session that I will participate in at my FLGCS during the year 2017. Not only will this be second of my 5 Takeaways for AL (and in general) but my last such for D&D. Everything goes right, barring winter related hiccups, next week's will be Shadowrun-related.

Five Takeaways for 12/11/2017

  • DM Adjudication and Flexibility Made the Session - Was a fun game to play in. Much of that was because of how the DM adjudicated the rules and rules related to the session itself. Plus, the DM altered the nature of one encounter such that it followed the preceding encounter much more organic than otherwise.

  • I Love Being a Tortle!- As an example of the first takeaway, the DM allowed my PC's using his tortle ability retreat into his shell to have a much, more positive impact than the encounter's rules would have allowed. Coolest tortle moment for the PC yet!

  • Firbolg-Tiefling pile - Following one of the coolest ad hoc moment of the module (all to due PCs except mine coming up with ingenious solutions), the tiefling hanging from an overhead rope bridge dropped down into the arms of the firbolg PC underneath. Both failed their Athletics/Acrobatics checks and tumbled into a pile. Table erupted into laughter. Fun times.

  • Tiefling-Demon-hunting Paladin rivalry - This may be the second or third module both the tiefling and paladin adventured together with. The paladin has a problem with tieflings. Meanwhile the tiefling enjoys antagonizing the paladin. At one point, the tiefling tossed a child (who had caused trouble for the paladin) from a rope bridge down toward the paladin to catch. Later on during a combat the tiefling pretty much saved the paladin. During another fight, the paladin dispatched some foes that were battling the tiefling. Swear once I blog the game session re-cap, half the write up will be devoted to these two.

  • Feeling better about basic monk abilities but not much the more ninja-related ones - Yep, my tortle is indeed a monk following the way of shadow, ie ninja. Felt I had a better grasp of and utilized the basic uses of Qi during this session. Didn't Flurry of Blows when I should have dodged or any such. Didn't feel I used an unnecessary Step of the Wind. On the other hand, I haven't used any of the Way of Shadow stuff yet. Playing next to a rogue, I feel it pales in the stealth department. Even choosing the Skulker feat, I'm not quite feeling the shadow warrior concept yet...

That's it for now. Happy gaming!

D&D 5E: Arcane Trickster Mage Hand Lockpicking

Recently, a question came up during an Adventurers League (D&D 5E) session of why would a player choose Thief over Arcane Trickster? Other than flavor, an Arcane Trickster simply has more options. While a Thief can pick locks as a bonus action, an Arcane Trickster can do so at range with Mage Hand.

Simple, right?

Then during the same session, a druid wild shaped as a bear attempted to pick someone up with bear mouth. Despite nothing in rules outlawing that,  the consensus was a bear picking someone up with its mouth without hurting the creature was too powerful. I admit I didn't have a problem with that ruling.

But a mage hand lock-picking isn't too powerful?! After all, one subclasses 3rd level ability is vastly superior to another subclasses ability. Rather sketchy if you ask me.

If you've ever tried using a paper clip or a nail to pick a lock, it's not as simple as inserting the object into the keyhole. One tactile sense is huge. Or so I'm guessing anyway. Regardless, mage hand lock-picking is essentially inserting the tool sans any tactile sensations.

Whereas, a Thief can pick a lock as bonus action because they are exceptionally well-versed at it. And they are bloody right next to it!

So, an arcane trickster being able to do the same thing strikes me as wrong.

As a DM, I would impose disadvantage but the rules do state that as use of the ability. As a compromise, I wouldn't allow one's tool proficiency to apply. The PC isn't next to the lock. Lock-picking isn't something they excel at as part of the subclass. It's kind of like doing fine mechanical work with gloves on. Not very easy.

But that's just me.

Happy Gaming!

Been A Long Time Since My Last Palladium X-Mas Grab Bag And They're Digital Now Too!

Christmas time rapidly approaches. Meaning snow, Santa, holiday cheer, various religious customs, and presents await! Another tradition going, at, or more than a decade is also underway. What tradition is that you may ask? Why Palladium Books X-Mas Grab Bag, of course!

For those unfamiliar, Palladium Books had a universal role-playing long before the d20 system roared upon the scene. From Fantasy to Rifts to Dead Reign to licensed properties such as Robotech and the defunct TMNT & Other Strangeness, Palladium adapted its rules system to cover a swath of genres. The company is very mom and pop, which strives to give back to its fans.

I'd describe the Palladium Books X-Mas Grab Bag; but Santa Kev (the owner of the company) explains so much better than I can. The ad copy is this.

Once upon a time, I would semi-regularly ask for or purchase a Palladium X-Mas Grab Bag. My budding Palladium collection grew in size. Most of the time, I ordered after Christmas. Another unspoken tradition is Palladium usually decides to extend the special past Christmas. Plus, the autographs were cool too! Unfortunately, with my time away from RPGs, the luster of ordering an annual grab bag faded. Didn't really seem practical either.

This year is different. This year marks a regular year for gaming. My interest in table-top rpgs has increased. Old games and companies are on my radar once more. Would be a nice blast of Christmas past if I were to acquire or ask for an X-Mas Grab Bag from Palladium.

On the other hand, the Palladium Megaversal System is a rules set I rarely play. Doubt I would find a group that would want to play it either or our schedules would mesh. Furthermore, I own boxes and boxes of unused books bearing the logo Palladium Books. While the nostalgia is nice, storage is an issue. In fact, my most recent purchases from Palladium has been the ebook variety from Drivethru RPG.

I should fret not. For Santa Kevin is on the case! The year 2017 marks the very first Digital X-Mas Surprise Package. INSERT ad copy. Palladium has steadily increased its digital offerings so there's quite a bit to choose from. Bonus: I need to worry duplicating what I already have! Digital back-ups would be nice... Been thinking of expanding my Palladium ebook library anyway...

Although all this talk of digital books aside, browsing through Palladium's catalog, there's a quite a bit of limited hardcovers that are more within my price range than a decade ago. But, I digress. Well, maybe not, they could be grab bag wants from the physical Surprise X-mas Grab Bag...

In any case, time isn't quite of the essence. I will decide all in due time. If I do, you can be sure I will blog about it.

Happy Gaming!

Five Take-aways From Last Night's AL Game 12/4/17

Last night was the most recent session of Adventurers League (organized play) using the fifth edition rules of Dungeons & Dragons at my favorite local game store. A game recap is forthcoming one of these days. Quite the backlog to process! However, I may pull a Robert E. Howard - Conan approach and not worry about chronological dates when each session occurred. Instead, I decided to copy an approach my local newspaper does covering sporting events. Essentially, the article is five take-aways, ie memorable moments/things learned from the event. My hope is to do this as a regular feature. Although I may not use that as a title for every entry. My latest Shadowrun entry about Suppressive Fire and PANs is kind of an early prototype.

  1. In-depth note-taking intensifies the feelings one experiences when one's PC is gang-piled - Every time I finish taking notes for a mod, I tell myself next time I will simplify. Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't. Last night was the former. Short but sweet, my PC ended up being swarmed by a band of baddies. Didn't go well for my PC. While the PC survived, I quickly became overwhelmed while recording each blow and my exasperation reached its peak when I repeated my PC was dropped to 0. In hindsight, the mere act of recording each blow immersed myself too much in the experience.

  1. Became too reliant on minis - I didn't play table-top role-playing games with miniatures until after I had been playing for at least five years. Theater-of-the-mind is an old familiar friend to me. More recent gaming, on the other hand, is very dependent on minis. Last night's game was a theater-of-the-mind session. Alas, I relied too much on my own assumptions and didn't inquire too many details from the DM. As such, my PC got into far too much trouble than I imagined.

  1. Familiarity with 5E Monk - Fifth edition difficulty lies within its apparent simplicity. While I am familiar with monks from earlier editions, I have not fully grasped how to play a monk PC in fifth.

  1. Offbeat modules - Other than my PC getting into far too much trouble than I at the time could maturely handle, I had been greatly enjoyed how the module deviated from the standard format. Adventurers League modules generally are comprised of three or four combats. This one only had the one. The other two chapters weren't combat encounters per se. First one could've been more for role-playing whereas the second was reminiscent of skill challenges from 4th edition. Without the tedious baggage of skill challenges. Would like more modules like that. Granted without the ramped up combat difficulty to compensate for the lack of combat.

  1. Thematic, game mechanic effect regarding zombies - In 5th edition, zombies make a saving throw when reduced to zero. If the zombie saves, the zombie was only reduced to 1 hp instead. Hit points and injuries are abstract in fifth edition. Only being reduced to zero hit points serves as the single arbiter of injury, ie "healthy" to dying. Zombies are extremely resilient and can require special means to dispatch. Since hit points are so abstract, called shots are meaningless. Thus, the mechanic. The DM decided to alter the mechanic. While the zombie wasn't reduced to zero hit points, ie destroyed, the zombie falls prone. Then on its turn, the zombie uses some movement to stand. Very thematic way of demonstrating the zombie's resilience while also providing a clue to PCs/players that the zombie isn't just an impenetrable mound of hit points.

So those are five things I gleaned from my most recent D&D session.

Happy Gaming!

SR5: Suppressive Fire vs Cover and PANs

This past Monday was the most recent session of Shadowrun Missions using the Fifth Edition rules at my local FLCGS. As anyone who's ever played Shadowrun 5th ed (SR5) know, the complexity of the rule-set is not for GMs for the faint of heart. As usual, I was a player so I didn't have to contend with the two tricky rule concepts among a group that likes to wade into complex and complicated rulings. Those rule concepts were Suppressive Fire into Total Cover and PANs (Personal-Area-Network).

Suppressive Fire

The suppressive fire was basically a PC firing a suppressive fire arc into the wall of a building. Everything was A-Okay until we realized a key NPC would not only be caught in the crossfire but probably wouldn't be taken action to avoid being hit. So we did review of the rules for suppressive fire and then proceeded to figure out the effects of firing into and penetrating a barrier. As anyone who has tried to quickly consult a rule in Shadowrun could attest it was not a simple process. After much yammering, a ruling was made and dice rolled.

Simple, right?

You'd be wrong.

After the game, I decided to brush up on the suppressive fire rules. Looked at the chart. It read: Duck or Take Cover. Hmm, that's weird. Why would take cover work due to the barrier rules? Read the first page. Everything checks out. Those adjacent and within arc suffer penalties to actions. Ok. Read the next page. Characters behind full cover don't have to make the test to avoid damage. Uh, oh. Meaning the barrier rules don't apply to suppressive fire against full cover.

So we got a rule wrong. Oops. As we're lucky if we play Shadowrun 5th edition once a month, we're still mastering the basics let alone the more advanced rules.

PANs

I must admit we generally take PANs for granted. Is there a decker or rigger present? The rest of runners link key gear to the RCC or deck and don't sweat the small stuff. Well, we ran into the thorny question of what happens when a PC has too much wireless gear; and the appearances of the PAN within PAN trees.

Personally, I view PANs as a rule mechanic for firewalls. Everyone's commlink could benefit from the firewall provided by the RCC/deck's PAN, while any wireless gear would be within commlink's micro-PAN and benefit from the commlink's firewall.

Turns out, my viewpoint was minority viewpoint. Everyone was too focused on the network aspect of a PAN and thus my viewpoint was deemed to powerful. The point of contention was that one of the PCs had wireless grenades. Many felt that it would create quasi-chain of networked items far larger than what the rules allowed. Fair enough.

After the game I got to thinking, all weapons are visible in the Matrix. A PC would have their PAN and every wireless weapon's icon would exist outside the PANs icon within the Matrix. Who the drek would walk around the sprawl with grenades visible on the Matrix. That's asking for trouble.

Solution: Just because an item is wireless doesn't mean it's on the PAN. You're not going to walk around with every wireless item on. As such as, it won't be visible on the Matrix and thus the item doesn't require the protection of the Matrix.

Quite sure that interpretation will foster quite the argument... er discussion. Which I will probably lose as we've had the Bluetooth analogy before.

A Quartet of Classic Macys Thanksgiving Clips

Another Thanksgiving and Cyber-Monday has come and gone. Over the years, I would occasionally watch the annual Macys Thanksgiving Parade. One thing I always enjoyed was the balloons, floats, and performances that would pertain to this blog such as Peanuts and Spider-Man. Recently, while perusing Youtube I discovered that He-Man and the Masters of the Universe had a float during both 1985 and 1986 parades.

So I went on a Macys Thanksgiving Parade clip binge.

Around that time, I decided to do something I have never done on this blog before. Share video clips.  So I researched how to do so. Learned out embedding. Then, I discovered blogger has an insert video function that pretty much cuts out that step if the video is from Youtube.

So without much ado, here are the clips of both He-Man and Marvel floats from 1986, 1985, 1989, and 1987.

Here's Dolph Lundgren (who portrayed He-Man in the live-action film from the 80's) narrating the He-Man float during the 1986 Macy's Thankgiving Parade. His narration is kind of wooden but the story the performers convey is decent given that its a float.

I liked the previous year's He-Man float better as well as appearances of the evil Horde. Strangely enough, characters that didn't appear until later are among the characters used...

Vividly recall as a kid enjoying the Marvel from 1989 which much in the same vein as the Masters of the Universe floats. Would spend the next decade watching ensuing Macy's Thanksgiving Parade for a repeat performance to no avail.

What I didn't know and didn't learn until recently was that Marvel had a similar float back in 1987. Captain America is the featured hero. Got to say watching Captain America manhandle the Hulk is hilarious!

Hope you all enjoyed this belated touch of a Thanksgiving tradition from the 1980s!

Charge it Marvel?!

Arriving home from work, I noticed I received mail from Marvel. You know the home of Spider-Man, Thor, Wolverine, and Howard the Duck? Yep, that Marvel. With baited excitement I pick up the envelop and discover... it is for a Marvel MasterCard.

Face it True Believers, apparently Marvel is getting into the credit card industry with MasterCard.

I scan it over and at first I think maybe it's a hoax. After all, one must apply online. Why would I want to do that? Normally, I throw out credit card offers. Only reason the envelop didn't immediately hit the wastebasket is because of the shiny Marvel logo.

I'll concede that the typical credit card boilerplate is present.

Both Marvel and MasterCard are presented via standard intellectual property.

Oh, Marvel Shop, digital comic sales, and Marvel Unlimited receive a cheap plug.

Okay, the Marvel MasterCard is probably legit. There's six designs one can pick from such as Awesome Mix to the Punisher skull to the Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes. I admit it would be cool while charging a purchase to mentally go 'Make Mine Marvel!' Plus, I could have a dedicated card for both comic purchases and Marvel Unlimited. The comics geek in me sees the potential.

Of course, I am just thinking out loud. Seeing this offer among my mail just struck my sense of novelty. Don't usually blog about comic book-branded credit cards after all!

So the next time you get ready to pay for something, you can charge it and make it Marvel.

And that is today's bit of whimsy.

Next time.

AL: WOTC Wants Your Thoughts on Adventurers League

With the advent of what is dubbed the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons (not going to quibble with that specific), Wizards of the Coast has exhibited a fondness for feedback in the form of surveys. You can't blame Wizards (WOTC). Fourth edition and the GSL's failure could be attributed in part to WotC being within a bubble. WotC asking for feedback most assuredly has broken the bubble and may very well have contributed to fifth edition's success and the advent of DM's Guild. Whenever WotC tinkers with new rules, they release playtest versions and ask for feedback. However, WotC hasn't surveyed one aspect of their business all that much.

Organized Play has not been a focal point for any feedback. Which is odd because the current version of WotC's Organized Play, Adventurers League, probably plays an outsized role in recruiting and retaining gamers. Fear not. As of today, WotC has issued a survey on Organized Play.

Link to the Adventurers League Survey can be found HERE.

Your mileage may vary from mine... The survey does change depending on whether or not you've participated in Adventurers League (AL)...

Filling out the survey, it confirms my belief that Adventurers League only fulfills the minimum of what I want in an RPG. As someone who can't and is unwilling to commit wholeheartedly to a regular gaming environment, Adventurers League at my local game store scratches my gaming itch. However, the framework of the modules and their connection to the hardcover adventures don't satisfy everything I want out of a game. For the most part, modules are too modular and PCs only have a limited impact on the direction of the mod along with limited chances for role-play and character growth. Skyrim is more an open world, which allows for more creativity and use of skills than the average Adventurers League module. I am generalizing of course as not all modules and DMs are equal but within the confines of a survey that's the impression my answers convey. And of course, one does not simply play an AL mod within the allotted time if the group exceeds x number of characters as combat bogs down. While I appreciate combat, I am quite happy with the one combat per game session per module.

If your impressions of Adventurers League differ, cool. If you're like, yeah, you're right, cool. The more who fill out the survey, the merrier. AL isn't perfect; and it does feel like WotC has neglected it too much.  Hope WotC learns much and that this isn't the last Organized Play survey.

Happy Gaming.

Halloween 2017: All Hallows' Eve

Might as well cut to the chase:

Happy Halloween!

Must confess I didn't do too much Halloween-related today. Not trick-or-treating. Didn't eat any candy. Was going to read the DC House of Horror one-shot after watching tonight's episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow set during Halloween but after fast-forwarding through the episode (yeah, I know shouldn't do that) I discovered next week's episode is set during the Victorian era and may feature vampires. So I figured I will watch that episode later.

As for the DC comic, I may read it tomorrow. Speaking of comics, while I didn't attend Halloween Comicfest, I did pick up some of the comics when I played Shadowrun Missions yesterday. They are: The Friendly Ghost Casper, Donald Duck's Halloween Scream, Shiver, Ghostbusters: Happy Halloween, and Hellboy and the BPRD 1953 The Witch Tree and Rawhead and Bloody Bones. With any luck, I'll be able to spend a huge chunk of Halloween day 2 (ie All Saints Day) reading comics!

What I did do was take advantage of One Book Shelf's Halloween sales and bundles. Discovered that the Barovia modules for Adventurers League (AL04) were cheaper via the bundle (@ 40% off) and thus the better option. While I was at it, I picked up the Mummy: the Curse (nWOD) bundle and a Monster comics bundle (has the Doctor Mirage trade from Valiant). Then I realized I could pick up the core book and all five supplements for Palladium Book's Dead Reign much cheaper than normal. For those unfamiliar with Dead Reign, it is Palladium Book's post-zombie apocalypse setting. While I already own a copy of the core book, I don't have easy access to it and watching The Walking Dead puts me in a zombie apocalypse mood. Don't know if I would ever run it though.

Then I check out some Halloween-related links:

The pumpkin genome has been sequenced.

Here's a quick history of pumpkins. Fun fact: Europeans had never seen them before coming to North America.

The pumpkin produces a compound that is a natural disinfectant!

I must confess I haven't seen the newest version of the movie IT. Here's how Stephen King's work such IT parallel the Cthhulhu Mythos.

Viking zombies and the means of dispatching them can be read about here.

Now, I think I am going to watch some Halloween movies!

Next time.

Halloween '17: The Most Halloween-like Shadowrun Mission Module I've Ever Played

Within a couple hours, my local FLCGS will host its once a month Shadowrun Missions event. Unlike last year, as mentioned in the 'was Halloween night trick-or-treat?' blog entry, I don't think tonight's event will be cancelled. As Halloween is tomorrow, here's a game write-up of the module that reflected Halloween the most. At least couple Shadowrun Missions would qualify...

The cast: Truce a human drone rigger. "Snuffles" - a dwarf decker with a fondness for Sesame Street. Umi - Elven Face Adept. Lastly, I played Nox Human Combat Mage.

Thereby Spoilers but I will avoid specifics as much as possible... I'll also switch from 1st to 3rd person quite a bit too.

Our quartet of shadowrunners were hired by a duo familiar to us whose identities will remain anonymous. We're professional like that chummer! Anyway, our job was to find a missing family or two. First, we had to investigate an office. Passkey provided.

So the office, which didn't have an astral barrier, was without power and thus no light. Nox learned the value of flashlights that day. Truce manages to jury-rig the electrical systems and power, lightning, and an electrical discharge zapping Truce comes on. Despite using the passkey, Snuffles still had to bypass the keypad. Footage is accessed displaying kids knocking out the guards with gas grenades. Umi the most perceptive of the runners doesn't pick up a minute clue. The quartet proceed to another office. Nox doesn't perceive any magical auras. Snuffles enters the host node within the Matrix and discovers one of the objects of our search was implanted with bleeding-edge tech! Umi and Truce with Snuffles decker-fu nab a couple of medkits. The runners leave the building with power on and lock up.

The next location is like a palace among the rundown vicinity of the Containment Zone. Upon smelling rotting flesh, gas masks are handed out. Nox scopes out the place by astrally projecting. Finds nothing in either the house or garden. Yet, when he checks out the shed he detects lumps within the ground are moving! Dreading astral combat, Nox beats it. Upon reaching the other runners, Nox informs them of what he finds. While they perform a Matrix search, Nox uses Cleansing metamagic and attempts to summon an Air Elemental Force 4. He gets 3 services.  The quartet then approach the house. Umi triggers a monofilament tripwire, which she edges to dodge. Snuffles proceeds to unlock the house when a shock nets falls on the hapless Snuffles and Umi. Nox manages to dodge the net. Nox sends his air elemental to scope out the shed. Learns that it was worms crawling over what may be dead bodies. As we enter the house, Snuffles enters the house node where a castle motif greets him. After much searching, Truce and Snuffles detect a secret room with a map of Chicago. Umi cooks stir fry and Nox locates another secret room where it's discovered that a boy is an object of a search... The runners leave discovering bike tracks by the shed, which is a chicken coup filled with dead chickens. Snuffles dons a hazmat suit and arranges for a dead chicken and their food/water to picked up by a contact for further analysis. Truce's drone notices female bikers going from house to house; and Truce contacts a female biker contact. Turns out its her group. Small world indeed chummers.

At a homeless shelter, a scene of death awaits. From there, Snuffles triangulates our next stop: a flower shop. As we arrive, it is sunset and the air elemental is freed. Nox astrally projects to discover there's an aura by the door and a mana barrier further in. Truce's drone enters. Upon the runners physically entering the flower shop, Nox has the bright idea to flick the switch from which the magical aura is fixated upon. Boom! Fireball. Nox's spell defense helps the group avoid must of the effects of the fireball. Then, the sprinkers turn on. Contact poison. Knock out gas to be precise. Snuffles wearing a hazmat suit is the only once conscious. Panicking he realizes the other three aren't dead. Drags our comatose bodies into the van and commands the drone to do the same.

When we wake, we buy hazmat suits, gas masks, and flashlights and return to the flower shop. Inside the office, we find a tunnel leading down. Nox with hazmat suit is too big to fit so he takes it off. After squeezing through a tunnel at the bottom, an overpowering stench hits us. No one loses their lunch. Then we enter a room which is pretty much a charnel house. Background Count of 4 aspected toward death! Pictures of human kids along with gore dots the walls. Then phasing out of the mist above us, two vampires appear and attack Nox and Umi! Nox is struck by a sword blow that reduces him to 1 box of physical! Umi uses her adept power of 'Too pretty' to dodge. Unfortunately for her the vampire on her connects with a sword a couple of times. Nox is fortunately missed. They are both saved by the burst fire from both Truce and Snuffles, which kills one vampire and injures another. Appearing outmatched, the lone vampire transforms into mist and escapes through the cracks! After gathering their bearings, the runners discover the remains of the dead kids among the bodies.

The SRM module was Season 06-01 10-57. It wasn't just the vampires that made me feel that this module was the most fitting for a Halloween blog entry. The creeping tension that culminated in a scene of horror, the fear of the unknown, and a feeling of imminent TPK secured the nod.

All Hallows' Eve is tomorrow.

Happy Gaming!

Halloween '17: Sunday Funnies Halloween Edition

As I blog this, Sunday is mere hour from being over. All Hallows' Eve is a mere two days away. Know what that means? Halloween-themed comic strips in today's Sunday Comics. Ergo, I am going to what I did this New Year's and do a run-down on select comic strips from today's comics. Will stick to the strips with a Halloween or Fall flavor.

Spoliers - if you haven't read today's, 10/29/2017, strips and desire not to know the details...

For Better or For Worse - Brings back memories of being the older sibling 'too old and mature' to trick-or-treating. Punch line is the final panel when Michael decides to wear an impromptu mask.

Zits - Not a Halloween comic strip per se but it does a good job of reflecting packing up summer things in preparation of Fall/Winter. Then the strip becomes about saving objects for Jeremy once he gets his own place. Jeremy, of course, has other plans.

Garfield - While no one's wearing a costume on panel, there's references to dressing up for a date. The reader is left to wonder what Jon's wearing so the context isn't as defined. I choose to see a Halloween costume. Haha!

Hi and Lois - The parents are dressed as Superman and Wonder Woman for a Halloween costume. Role reversal ensues!

Peanuts - Woodstock gingerly tries to navigate leaping from branch to branch. And fails. Fortunately, Snoopy to his chagrin breaks Woodstock's fall.

Wizard of Id - The Wizard pops out from strange places shouting 'Boo!' and scaring people. Even scares his jailer at the end.

Sally Forth - A kid pre-games his candy run at the Forth's home only to discover Ted's not there. The ensuing Baby Boomer rant about 'kids these days' is really much, much funnier than my summary can do justice.

B.C. - One of the character runs to and fro as he's scared by a pair of eyes and a canine. A *ahem* prehistoric version of those who watch scary movies for fun during Halloween time.

Dustin - Dustin cons a kid into helping him rake leaves. Excellent two panel strip.

Rose is Rose - Jimbo Gumbo gets an autographed pumpkin and a selfie with a famous pumpkin juggler whom meanwhile tries to squeeze more money out of Jimbo.

Foxtrot - The hijinks when the two kids go trick-or-treating as zombies while trying to pass themselves off as a real zombies only to be one-upped by a biology professor.

And there you have it, today's Fall/Halloween-themed Sunday comics! Once again, I enjoyed blogging about the latest edition of the Sunday funnies. Meant to do this more often this year, but the best laid plans of mice and men. Might do a 'best of' for each month before the end of the year. We'll see.

Halloween '17: The OBS Jack O'lantern (and Other Iconography) Trick or Treats Are Back!

Every Halloween I look forward to OneBookShelf's (DriveThru Comics, DriveThru Fiction, DriveThru RPG) annual Trick or Treat Jack O'Lantern scavenger search. Last year, they ushered in other Halloween iconography such as ghosts and witch hats. Whereas during the early days there was a trick, there haven't been any the prior two years. While they have a 30% (or is it 31%) off sale on select titles, the Jack O'Lantern search is what I am most excited about. I do love free stuff!

So what goodies did I find on each site:

DriveThru Comics
  • The Tithe #1
  • Badabing Badaboom! - an RPG adventure...
  • Free Pumpkin Mounted Knights
  • Valiant Universe Handbook: 2015 Edition - There is the much talked about Valiant Cinematic Universe on the horizon...
  • Escape from Zombie Earth
  • Ghost Hackers

DriveThru Fiction
  • Apex Magazine #1
  • Fear Fetchers
  • Ghost Hackers
  • Free Pumpkin Mounted Knights
  • Trilogy of the Second Age: Chosen of the Sun (set within the world of the Exalted RPG)
  • Bag of Tricks (has a Pathfinder logo on it)

DriveThru RPG
  • Fiasco: Camp Death
  • Free Pumpkin Mounted Knights
  • Ghost Hackers
  • Age of Cthulhu 3: Shadows of Leningrad
  • Something Wicked Stirs
  • Snap Sites: Vamonos Pizza - a GM aid

Hmm, there's a couple duplicate goodies across all three sites. Guess, you can sort of call that a trick! Overall, a decent trick or treat haul if I do say so myself.

Don't know yet if I'll purchase any of the bundles available on each site nor take advantage of the 31% off sale. The Ravenloft sale on DM's Guild is the one certainty. In addition to classic Ravenloft supplements, all the Season 4 modules set in Barovia and thus thematically connected to the Curse of Strahd storyline for Adventurers League are on sale. DM's Guild doesn't often discount Adventurers League modules (about as rare as rolling a Natural 20 more than three times during a combat!) so its perfect opportunity to stock up. Suppose since I am plugging on online site's digital sale, Dark Horse Digital has three Halloween sales going on. Found both Eerie and Creepy Megabundles irresistible! Only drawback is they're tied to Dark Horse Digital; but I doubt I would ever have purchased them hardcopy...

Perhaps I will read these all by or during next (2018) Halloween! I can dream, I can dream. Haha!

Only three more days until Halloween!

Halloween '17: Walking Dead S6 Part 1 Marathon

Much I did while anticipating Halloween last year, I binge-watched a season of The Walking Dead. Okay, unlike last year, I did not engage in a marathon viewing of an entire season such as I did with Season 5. Started much too late to repeat my performance with Season 6; and there's still plenty of other shows, movies, and comics I want to experience this Halloween season. So I stopped with Episode 8 since that's around the time the show underwent hiatus. Also, I didn't record these episodes like I did Season 5. Instead, I watched Season 6 (what I will dub Part One) via Netflix. Since Netflix doesn't have commercials, my stream-of-conscious thoughts per episode will be from recall.

First Time Again
  • The black & white flashbacks were kind of neat from an experimental point of view. However, I would have preferred to see some of the scenes via color such as the grand shot of the walker herd pinned behind the two trailers.

JSS
  • Last year, I theorized that Ennid (or however you spell her name) was the daughter of the leader of the Whisperers based on some stuff I gleaned from the comics. Yeah, about that... I was wrong. Unless the flashbacks are misleading, Ennid most definitely isn't one of them.
  • So how'd the raw turtle she ate not sicken her?
  • Have to say the 'I won't kill anyone and all life is precious' Morgan is the perfect counter-balance to the 'the world is death, savagery, and no place for the civilized' of the Wolves.
  • Carol is badass.
Thank You
  • Michonne and Glen's interactions with the new Alexandrians was kind of neat.
  • Nothing ever goes smooth in Walking Dead-land.
  • Rick is a badass and how's he getting out of this one!
  • Similarly, how is Glen...
Here's Not Here
  • How Morgan transitioned from out-of-his-mind *ahem* clearer to the tranquil staff-wielding badass.
  • Eastman was pretty cool.
  • Of the eight episodes I marathoned over the last several days, I enjoyed this one the most.
Now
  • Hmm, I must've missed the part when Michonne and crew returned...
  • Clearly, Rick out-racing the walker herd from the RV won't be shown...
  • Talked about decomposed walkers! Wonder why no one noticed they were gone...
Always Accountable
  • Could the group of men be connected to Negan and the Saviors?
  • Tarp covered zombies.... Missed out those two were connected to the two girls.
  • Being dependent on insulin shots during a post-zombie apocalypse is not a good thing.
  • Talk about scorched earth!
  • Probably the best Abraham moment during the entire series! Wonder what he'll do with the rocket-propelled grenade!
  • Love recurring motifs such as oil & gas company.
Heads Up
  • Spencer is quite the loose cannon although him attempting to shimmy along the line was cool until the hook came loose.
  • Glenn surviving by crawling out from Nicholaus's corpse under the dumpster was kind of neat. Although I found it curious the walkers lost interest in him. Could it be too many dead walkers masked him?
  • One of these times the Glenn won't escape certain death. Like when Negan appears such as in the comic...
  • Yep, my Ennid theory is definitely wrong. Sigh.
  • That tower doesn't look too healthy... Speaking of which I didn't put two-and-two together that Spencer shot the driver and that's why the truck ran into the tower and not the wall.
  • And down it goes!
Start to Finish
  • Here's the zombie carnage we've been anticipating!
  • Not surprised Morgan defeated Carol as he's had training.
  • Hey, Eugene was useful! Lockpicking for the win.
  • Love the return of the zombie guts camouflage!
  • Negan is coming!
And thus ends my Halloween Walking Dead marathon. Since I have Netflix I am pretty sure I will watch the remainder of the season (already skimmed through Episode 9 *cough* *cough*) and Season 7 by next Halloween. Or who knows maybe I'll wait until next Halloween season to watch them. I certainly will blog about it though!

Only 4 more days until Halloween!

Halloween '17: A Trio of Halloween Links

Been awhile since I last shared some links I found interesting via this blog. As Halloween rapidly approaches, here is trio of links that I felt had a Halloween flavor.

Death and the dead are huge theme of Halloween. You can't swing a stick among Halloween decorations without hitting depictions of graveyards, headstones, and skeletons. One can say Halloween is a holiday during which we grapple with a destination that awaits us all: the grave. However, not all cultures practice the same funeral rites and interact with the dead in the same manner. Here's a National Geographic ARTICLE in which a mortician is interviewed to discuss various funeral rites such as a mummified family member residing in one's home to composting the dead. Very fascinating. Could probably spice up one's tabletop role-playing game too!

Last couple Halloweens, I've mentioned folklore such as the draugr among others. I found this list of creatures from POLISH folklore interesting. The Północnica gives off a Freddy Krueger-like vibe. Nothing more terrifying than a monster that kills us in our dreams. That's just one among a handful. As someone who has game mastered, there's quite a bit here!

Seeing how this is a comics and games blog, I would be remiss not to include something that actually has bearing on an actual game. Polish, and Slavic, folklore permeates the Witcher videogame series. HERE'S how a ghost story from a Polish poem influenced a scene from the Witcher 3. Video games are truly an excellent means to spread stories and cultural elements among other cultures.

Hope you found these three Halloween-related links as interesting as I did. Only six more days until Halloween!

Halloween '17: A Half-Orc Barbarian Attends a Costume Party

A Half-Orc Barbarian Wearing Glasses?!

Ladies and gentlemen, my original title had I blogged this earlier. Before October. Lacks the Halloween-flair, don't you think?

Why is this virtually the first Halloween 2017 blog entry you may ask? Why, because the events transcribed below occurred Halloween night on 2016. Shadowrun Missions had been planned that evening. Alas, we didn't have enough players that evening so that game was cancelled. One may call it a Halloween trick if they may. Deciding to salvage our gaming session that All Hallows Eve, the four of us decided to replay a two-hour Adventurers League (D&D 5E) module.

That module was *dun dun dun* Hillsfar Reclaimed a Year 3 module tied to the Out of the Abyss storyline.

Your humble narrator of those events can regale you with the events that followed because I took notes. Now, my note-taking was in its infancy in those days, although to be honest its still developing to this day, so your humble narrator must * ahem * decipher his own notes. Plus, think this is among the first of the much promised game write-ups I have been mentioning...

The cast: My PC - Grogg the Half-Orc Barbarian. Believe he was 2nd level at the time. The other two PC's were Jared a war cleric and Pax the cleric of a domain I do know. Trickery wouldn't surprise me though given how the PC acted. Believe they were both human but not sure as I didn't record such at the time but they were both level 4.

I'm going to forego much of the background and many of salient points of the adventure so while there be spoilers many of them will be out of context.

Our intrepid adventurers had to access a secret entrance while underneath in the sewer system. Grogg was dismayed to encounter a swarm of rats and utters a 'why did it have to be rats!' ala Indiana Jones talking about snakes. Unfortunately, the rat swarm really, really liked Grogg and proceeded to swarm him. Feeling left out, another rat swarm assaults poor Grogg and crits! Poor Grogg is ineffectual at defending himself. He also *ahem* forgot to rage. Upon realizing that, I decided to make the * tactical * decision to not rage all combat. Thank goodness for two 4th level clerics nearby!

One of the clerics, the war cleric Jared vanquishes one of the swarms. Alas, poor Grogg is downed by the swarm. Uhm, yeah I forgot about the half-orc's ability to avoid that... One of the clerics heals Grogg. Again, as it was the early days of my note-taking I do not know if it was Jared or Pax. The rat swarm nibbles on Grogg dropping him to 1 hp. After missing three strikes, Grogg finally connects and downs the remaining rat swarm with his great axe! Rummaging through rubble, Pax and Jared find a pair of glasses. Out of jest, Pax places the glasses onto Grogg. Hence, the original title. Pax convinces the puzzled Grogg to continue wearing them.

Eventually, the adventuring trio are hired to infiltrate a nobleman, who hates nonhumans, costume party. We're provided magical means to disguise ourselves. Grogg adopts the nondescript moniker of 'Bob'. While weaving our way through the crowded streets, the befuddled Grogg dodges an errant horse. Despite Jared's attempt to calm the horse, Pax is struck. Since we're down on hit points and there's plenty of time to infiltrate the costume party, we short rest. I rolled a 12 on the hit die healing!

The trio reach the keep where we're each individually interviewed as to why we should be hired on as extra help. Grogg: "I am Bob. Just got here. I work cheaply and move heavy objects." The interviewer listens to each of us with blatant disgust. Desperate to be done with his sordid task he hires us on and we're ushered on.

While being signed in, Grogg discovers the glasses are tremendous help while performing a quick investigation of the desk. With advantage, he gets a natural 20 and discovers the schedule we seek. After sign-in, Grogg receives 1 GP and true to his human peasant disguise he celebrates as if he acquired hundreds of gold pieces. As its a costume party and the lord hosting detests nonhumans, we're given the option of wearing masks whose depiction is a mockery of several non-human PC races. The magically-disguised-as-human Grogg decides to slyly rib the nobles by selecting... the half-orc costume. Meanwhile, Pax chooses to heckle Grogg while also selecting the half-orc costume.

Well, there's a party and party stuff happens. Eventually, as with all D&D modules, combat occurs. The two clerics and their half-orc barbarian discover that two of the human nobles aren't who we thought they were. They were magically disguised too! Except they weren't disguised PC races. They were actually demons! Hmm, guess the mod is more Halloween-related than I thought! Plus, Out of the Abyss does have a connection to the Abyss and demons and year 3 modules did contain the occasional demon. But I digress.

The demons were succubus and an incubus. Fortunately, the incubus didn't actively engage in battle. As for succubus, battle was joined!

Unfortunately, she uses her wiles of a succubus and gazes at Pax. Who promptly fails his Wisdom save and strikes Grogg. Fortunately for Pax, the then raging barbarian Grogg had decided to focus his fury on the demon instead due to the unease he felt toward it due to his tribal upbringing. Afterwards, Pax would feel his wrath. The succubus kisses Pax, which saps Pax of much of his hit points but enabling him to break his compulsion. Grogg's swings at the succubus experiences the same luck as with the rats as he misses terribly. She, however, does not miss him. Jared strikes her with his magical weapon (which he may have cast earlier...) and then attacks again with a spiritual weapon he brings forth with a prayer. Pax using his priestly magic calls upon the Radiant of Dawn onto both fiends. The incubus who had stayed out of the battle reacts by going ethereal and flees. The succubus attempts her succubus wiles on Grogg. Unlike Pax the cleric had, Grogg shrugs off her charm! Grogg then realizing Pax must not have been so lucky decides to attack her instead. Finally, Jared's spiritual weapon vanquishes her.

The adventurers get everything sorted out and manage to leave the keep unmolested by the very, very embarrassed guard.

Pax's trick on Grogg with the glasses turns out to be more of a Halloween treat as they're magical glasses. The barbarian * ahem* keeps them. Grogg also leveled too!

And that folks, is what transpired during my unexpected D&D session on All Hallows' Eve last year.

Happy Gaming!

Teenage Monk Ninja Tortles and Other Charities!

Old-time gamers will get the reference of the title right away. Yep, it's true. It is a play on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Other Strangeness.

Growing up, I was (heck, I still am!) a huge Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan. Before I played my very first game of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition, I sifted through the pages of Palladium Books' TMNT & Other Strangeness, Revised Edition. Being unfamiliar with RPGs, the stats were pretty greek to me. Then when the door to RPGs were opened to me, I just had to try it out. We never did play TMNT & Other Strangeness much. Plus, I never did play a mutant turtle.

Around the same time, TSR released an expansion to it's AD&D Mystara line called Red Steel. Red Steel was quite the exotic setting. Among the new races included was the tortle. A tortle is exactly what it sounds like: a humanoid turtle. Cue ninja turtle jokes. Boy, did those jokes fly. We never did create those ninja tortles nor used Red Steel very much.

Flash forward a couple decades, (sigh has it been this long?!) Fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons debuts. The monk class contains a subclass called the Way of the Shadow. Ninjas are referenced as examples of such monks. If you're thinking I got ideas about creating a ninja, you'd be right.

Over the last several months, social media was abuzz with folks inquiring about WOTC adapting the tortle to 5E. Their response is encouraging.

And just like that, WOTC unveiled the torle as a playable race, and AL legal too!, as part of package where proceeds go to their Extra Life charity initiative, which donates to Children's Miracle Network. WOTC is engaging in other activities besides the Tortle Package for Extra Life and you can read about them (and the Tortle Package) HERE. It's pretty cool!

So donate to Extra Life, watch the games on Twitch, attend the sponsored tables in Game-Hole Con in Wisconsin, and/or purchase the Tortle Package if you want to contribute to Children's Miracle Network.

Don't know about you but I am itching to play a teenage monk ninja tortle myself.

Happy Gaming!

AL: My Confusion Over Season 7 Death Curse Cleared Up

Last month, only blogged twice during September so the entry should be easy to find, I vented my confusion over the Season 7 Death Curse and how it effects older characters. PCs whom died and are unlikely to be played in Season 7 mods.

As a refresher, much of my irritations was due to the timey-wimey nature of Adventurers League. AL was never really concerned over time lines before. At my FLCS, our 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons AL characters can expect to play a regular season module one week only to play a replay of an earlier season module the next. I've had the rotten luck to only have one AL PC not need to be raised from the dead.

Turns out, the answer I sought was to be found in the Death Curse Primer downloadable from DM Guild as part of the DM packet.

First, Season 7 modules WILL cover a timeline. Sort of. For a player such as myself who has several PCs whom would be subject to the Death Curse, I can't play those characters in any Tier 1 or Tier 2 Season 7 modules or two consecutive community created content modules. Plus, the Tomb of Annihilation. Given I can only really play D&D at my FLGCS on their RPG nights, Tomb of Annihilation isn't really an option for me.

So that lead to second point, I can play all those characters in any earlier season AL module to my heart's, and FLGCS's, desire. Again, CCC (Community Created Content) mods are the exception to this. I can play one of those and only one per PC until...

Third, the new year marks the end of the AL-wide "Death Curse Banner Decree". Come January 2018, Adventurers League considers the events of Tomb Annihilation to have been completed as Tier 3 and Tier 4 modules occur after the events of the hardcover module. So all the PC that sat out, can be played once more. I'm guessing for players like your truly would have to play a surrogate for a Death Cursed-PC in a Tier 3 module in order to break the curse for said PC. That last part is a little unclear...

So there you have it, my AL Death Curse question has been answered for the most part. Simply don't play my other PCs until the New Year unless they are Season 1 - 6 and associated Hardcover modules. As for the PCs that do, I suppose January 2018 will answer that question.

Follow-up to Vintage Marvel Animated on Hulu along with Marvel's Inhumans First Impressions

Friday the 13th is winding down and I figured I cap the day with... a non-Halloween/horror post. Cause it's not just Friday the 13th, today is three days after the supposed expiration of vintage (okay 1990s vintage, sheesh!) Marvel Animated shows on Hulu along with the third week (and fourth episode) of Marvel's Inhumans.

First off, everyone such as myself who had those old Marvel animated shows (Fox Spider-Man, X-Men, Spider-Man Unlimited, X-Men Evolution, Iron Man Armored Avenger) at the bottom of their queue can relax. After the 10th when I logged onto Hulu to check to see if those shows expired, not only had they not expired but Hulu treated them as brand new shows! Don't know why but it certainly provides more time to watch them. Right? Hoping this doesn't mean they are "new" shows for a couple months and then expire.

Second, speaking of Marvel shows of more recent vintage, today marks the initial broadcast of the fourth episode and third week of Marvel's Inhumans.

Now, I understand Marvel's Inhumans didn't start with the best acclaim. I suppose much of that had to due with the first two episodes being shown on IMAX first. Got to say, those first two episodes are be-yoo-ti-ful. Much glossier than the more recent two. Folks also paid money to see it; and the IMAX showing didn't contain a couple exposition scenes the television debut had. While I felt the first two episodes were stellar, I did watch them on the television. As a movie that I paid money for, I don't think I would have enjoyed it as much. Plus, the bad press could be because the Inhumans are new and unfair comparisons with the X-Men are being made.

Okay, I am not a fan of Maximus terragenesis on the show being transformed into a human and not a super-genius who's very, very off his rocker. Well, Maximus does come across as both very bright and high on the megalomania scale on the show though. Perhaps, the lack of Kirby tech is glaring omission?

While watching the first couple episodes, I got a Basilisk vibe when each of the characters demonstrated their Inhuman power as each power was deployed to strategic effect in a surprising manner. Much like the ninjas in that anime/manga demonstrate their unique gifts. Black Bolt and Medusa's romantic relationship, although much less tragic, along with the "dueling" families also contribute to that impression. Okay, I am kind of reading into that comparison a little too much. Haha! The body count is much, much less than Basilisk.

For the first time, I fully understand why Black Bolt doesn't and will not kill Maximus. The difference between watching on screen versus a static page.

Halloween: A Compilation of Halloween Blog Entries Past

We're nearing the mid-point of the month of October. No what that means? Halloween is almost around the corner. Last couple years, I pretty much devoted the month of October and a little of November to Halloween. Plus, I'd promise to dedicate my blog entries to the holiday. While I plan on Halloween entries for 2017, I am not doing a '13 days of Halloween' nor devote the rest of the month to it. Plan on blogging about things besides Halloween this month! Whenever I do blog about something Halloween-related 'Halloween' will appear within the title.

Since I have blogged using Halloween themes for a couple years, I decided I would kick off my Halloween theme by compiling my blog posts of Halloweens past. So if you've read them before, you take a trip down nostalgia lane with me by revisiting all 15 entries. If not, here ya go.

2015

The 2015 OBS Jack O' Lantern Haul can be found HERE. Got to say, I forgot I had some of these! With any luck I will get around to reading and reviewing some of them before the end of the month.

Vertigo 2015 Preview can be found HERE. Alas, I never did pick up nor read most of these titles. While I purchased the first couple issues of Clean Room and Unfollow, they became more wait for the trade. Did acquire more issues of Lucifer though, including duplicates of the first issue! Unfortunately, I hadn't added Lucifer to my pull list so there's gaps in my collection. Some reviews would be quite fitting wouldn't they?

My review for the movie the Last Witch Hunter is HERE. One of my rare movie reviews.

Howling Commandos of SHIELD #1 (ANAD) Review can be found HERE. Might actually be my only review from Marvel's All-New All-Different banner. Really should read the remaining five issues then they could be reviewed under my On the bubble/Cancelled heading that I haven't gone beyond announcing...

Halloween-related shows reviewed during the week of Halloween can be found HERE.  I had done a weekly recap of what I considered were Halloween-related shows. They were: iZombie, The Player, Sleepy Hollow, and Grimm.

2016

Exorcist the series write-ups can be found HERE and HERE. Still haven't finished the rest of the first season or started the second season yet. Once again, I am considering covering this year.

2016 OBS Trick or Treat Haul is HERE. Yeah, if I OBS does a Jack O' Lantern thing again this year, you can be certain I will blog about it.

Ghost Rider Arc for Marvels Agents of SHIELD: PART 1 and Part 2.

The Walking Dead Season 5 Write-Up is HERE. I did marathon viewing of season 5 of The Walking Dead and composed my thoughts. Neither season 6 nor season 7 were available to me then. Now, I have access to them on Netflix...

Ash meets Cthulhu?! - another comic book review.

Halloween 2016 Game NIGHT. Several future blog entries will be tied to this...

Samhain/All Saint's Day readings. A bunch of stuff I read on that day.

November 2nd: My final installment on All Soul's Day included my thoughts on the origins of Ghost Rider in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, how Mexico decided to copy the James Bond film Spectre, and a shoutout for Disney's Giant Halloween Hex #1. I've been meaning to write a review for Giant Halloween Hex #1 for awhile. What do you know? It's Halloween season again!

So here's my look back at Halloween blog posts' past.

DC's Version of Marvel Legacy Makes Sense

Slowly, the comics news sites are revealing DC titles are resuming older numbering, which pre-dates Rebirth, and probably New 52, numbering. Kind of like Marvel Legacy. However, I hazard to say DC's Legacy makes more sense actually.

While Marvel Legacy is essentially a PR move, DC's rumored re-numbering is more about time. DC Rebirth is meant to restore the classic elements New 52 chucked aside. Well, spoilers, Rebirth is really much more than that. See, New 52 wasn't really a new reality; but a cosmic alteration of the Post-Crisis DC many readers grew up on. The story of Rebirth is about gradually taking the New 52 and slowly easing the DC universe back to what it was before. Without disrespecting the readers who came aboard for New 52.

Since DC is going back to what it was before storywise, only fitting the titles resume their old legacy numbering.

Time to Revise Gun vs Knight History Books!

We've read the history books. The Age of the Knight came to an end with advent of the gun. Secrets of the Shining Knight the Nova documentary on PBS examines both that question and the nature of the shiny plate armor the knight wore itself.

I am not going to discuss much of what Secrets of the Shining Knight here. It's a very excellent documentary. If you haven't seen it yet, you should. Get to watch plate mail forged!

So did guns eliminate the knight? Not quite the way the history books say. Yes, most armor isn't very effective against muskets. Remember the ridiculous looking lobster armor the knight is popularized as wearing? Not only is lobster armor the ultimate evolution of plate and medieval armor; but it worked against the musket balls of its time. Secrets of the Shining Knight demonstrates that quite excellently.

The following is an insight I gleaned from hints Secrets of the Shining Knight provides.

If the lobster armor worked, why did the shining knight go the way of the dodo? Because the lobster armor was expensive and the emerging nation-states with their standing armies didn't need the wealthy knight who wore the armor to fight their battles.

Shining knight armor disappeared because it was too expensive to field an army with the lobster armor required to resist the muskets of the time. Thus, began the trend of focusing on firepower over armor.

Talk about PBS's billing of 'Think Wednesday' living up to its moniker! Never would have thought of this post' s topic without seeing today's documentary.

Apparently, Hulu's Marvel Animated Shows Are Leaving Later This Month

When I first returned to Hulu after a several years' hiatus, I added a slew of (vintage) Marvel animated shows to my watch list. The nineties Fox Kids shows Spider-Man, Spider-Man Unlimited, and X-men. X-Men Evolution and Iron Man: Armored Avenger too. X-Men Evolution has been available on Hulu for about as long as the streaming service existed.

My intent was to watch those shows much like a stroll down nostalgia lane at my leisure. Other shows took priority. Mostly because many were expiring. There's certain irony here...

A couple days ago I checked the expiring section of my watch list which is my custom. Lo and behold, all the aforementioned Marvel Animated shows are set to expire! I scroll over and discover that as of this moment, all those shows are supposed to leave Hulu on the 10th. Of October.

Okay, okay, I have observed Hulu will push the expiration of show past the initial date by weeks or a couple months. In theory, I could binge watch a show or two.

The problem is other than Spider-Man Unlimited those other shows ran twenty-plus episodes. I ain't got time to binge-watch all of 'em! There's other shows that I don't want to eventually play the same game as the expiring-priority game is a zero-sum game indeed. Furthermore, the new television season has begun. Hulu is like a back up DVR and provided I view an episode in a timely manner an indirect way of influencing ratings. So unfortunately, I won't be making an effort to watch any of the classic (boy I feel old writing this!) Marvel Animated shows on Hulu.

Hopefully, the notice that Spider-Man, Spider-Man Unlimited, X-Men, X-Men Evolution, and Iron Man: Armored Avenger is expiring on the 10th of October (or later during the month) is meant to boost viewings on the shows can remain on Hulu for a little bit longer. Or return.

Don't believe Disney's proposed streaming service is starting anytime soon...

AL: Started Season 7 Unexpectedly in an Unexpected Fashion

Earlier this month, I expressed my concern over how AL was handling the Death Curse especially for characters whom haven't participated in Tomb of Annihilation (the module Season 7 is ties with) or Season 7 modules. At the time of my writing, my FLGCS wouldn't start running  Season 7 modules until October. Oh and I had volunteered to run a low Tier 1 (levels 1 - 4) table.

Yep, I may DM my very first Adventurers League Module with DDAL07-01! Although that's looking like a maybe...

When I started participating in Adventurers League, I was asked if I would be willing to help run modules, and thus broaden the GM pool, at the FLGCS. Due to my lack of familiarity with D&D 5E and my schedule during that time period, I declined. However, due to a character being unavailable because a lack of down time prevents him from leaving Barovia, I decided I would DM replays of Season 5 (tie-in with Storm Kings Thunder). Downloaded the DM packet and DM rewards too! Never did DM.  Once again, my sporadic gaming schedule kicked in such that I never played much Season 5 so there went my condition to run it.

My schedule has changed such that I can participate regularly on Adventurers League nights.

With a schedule that allows full participation and Death Curse-wariness, I pondered DMing AL mods once again. While purchasing a couple bundles (part of the subject of a future blog entry), I decided to buy DDAL07-01 on a whim. As such why not try my hand at running a module! Therefore, I was expecting my first foray into season 7 would be as a DM and not a player.

Best laid plans of mice and men and all that, the scheduled module was bumped due to an unforeseen absence. Rather then several players anticipating playing a Tier 2 (5 - 10 ) calling it a night, the store decided to run the Tier 2 "intro" (DDAL07-02) for Season 7 early. Well, one or two missions anyway. Since my planned PC hasn't died yet, I played my first season 7 module.

We only finished the first mission (out of five). Absolutely loved the jungle pulp action vibe. The DMs ability to story-tell under time crunch will make or break the experience! Our table wasn't too challenged despite playing strong (or very strong) probably because we had PCs whom excelled facing foes we fought. The final battle of the first mission is very evocative of Howard (of Conan fame).

So yeah, I wasn't expecting to play Season 7 modules as a player so soon. By the time I have to worry about how the Death Curse applies to non-Season 7 modules, an answer to my question should be available.

Happy Gaming!

AL: Death Curse Without Season 7 Mods?!

So season 7 modules, based on Tomb of Annihilation, started. So has the Death Curse.

What's the Death Curse? The Death Curse prevents any magic from bringing dead characters back to live and slowly kills those whom have been. It's the major stick for the arc.

There is some confusion whether or not all characters are under it. Including those who haven't played any Season 7 mods or Tomb of Annihilation.

So three of my PCs are relatively unplayable. My local FLGCS doesn't start Season 7 until October.

Now, I understand a table with PCs subject to the Death Curse and others not would cause chaos. However, Adenturers League has always waved at continuity and watched as it goes by. I can start with a year 5 mod then play a year 1 mod and follow it with a year 3 mod. Only one's starting year impacted one's PC before.

Now AL has suggested new PCs but hasn't provided any answers for older characters. Very frustrating.

SR5 Not Dead Yet Not Same As SR3 Hand of God

Last night while playing a Shadowrun Missions module for Shadowrun 5th edition our table had the rather exciting situation of two PCs caught within the blast radius of all the grenades on grenade belt exploding. One of the PCs is not the subject of today's entry as will become clear once I finally write the session write-up (from a player perspective). Yeah, a plethora awaits.

See, even though role-playing games allow PCs to withstand powerful attacks like a grenade, several grenades exploding at once is still hazardous for one's health.

Fortunately, the other PC had an Edge rating.

Shadowrun 5th edition allows PCs to burn a point of Edge such that they are not dead yet.

For veteran Shadowrun players such as myself who've played third edition, we automatically think of that edition's hand of god.

Except they aren't quite the same.

Sure, both allow a PC to avoid dying from effect that would otherwise spell instant doom. They work differently.

SR3's Hand of God required a PC to spend a point of Karma available within the Karma Pool and then expend all Karma in order to avoid certain death once. Once and only once would the grim reaper of all shadowrunners hand be stayed. Yours truly, utilized Hand of God when my orc street samurai sustained a deadly wound and was tossed near some alligators. Afterwards, he started from scratch karma-wise thereafter. Good times. Good times.

Meanwhile, SR5's Not Dead Yet meanwhile only allowed the PC caught within the exploding grenade chorus to burn a permanent Edge. The RAW (rules as written) don't specifically state said PC must've had a point of Edge remaining within the Edge pool. Apparently, some of the participants learned that was intended as well (RAI).

Plus unlike my poor Orc Street Samurai, said PC can use Not Dead Yet for the remainder of shadowrunning career as long as the PC never burns all Edge and/or buys a new rating of Edge.

Must confess the last caused some cognitive dissonance on my end. Read the passage over and over again. Had a hard time shaking my confusing it with the old rule. Which is why I have taken it upon myself to blog about confusing old rules with new rules. Years ago, when I had started playing third edition Shadowrun, I corrected some old time players that the rules were different now. Flash forward to now, there's been a couple times I slipped back into third edition. Rules arguments are never fun especially when at the heart of the argument is rules differences between editions.

Another thing that came up in reference to Not Dead Yet and burning Edge was one's total Karma earned would be reduced. Don't know if that's rules confusion ala Hand of God or how Shadowrun Missions wants to record it. Shadowrun already has things such as initiation ordeals that permanently reduce both attributes and attribute limits that don't negatively impact a PC's total karma earned. Furthermore, a PC could very well never have raised Edge. If so, karma was never spent on an attribute point which no longer exists. Perhaps it's for record-keeping and determination of prime runner status purposes. Maybe the RAI meant for character's Street Rep to suffer whenever Edge is burnt?

All matters for further research and discussion.

Thus ends the latest installment of rules differences between editions.

Till Next Time,

Happy Gaming!

Greedo Missing Was Just A Bad Attack Role

Today I came to the realization, which I am sure the webcomic Darths & Droids already has, that Greedo missing Han could have come straight out a table-top RPG session.

What's that? Han shot first? Yes, yes, I know that. I remember watching on a television screen long, long ago and being caught by surprise when Han shot Greedo. I also recall later on but still long, long ago being surprised in local cinema seeing Greedo shooting first. And missing.

Sure, folks were riled caused Han originally shot first. Yes, Greedo shooting first in a fashion nullifies Han's character development from a sketchy rogue to a good guy. Eh, maybe. Let's be honest, everyone was like 'how did Greedo miss?! Han was right there! What was Lucas thinking?'

Okay, while I doubt Lucas has played, but any table-top role-player has been there before. Missing the target one would think impossible to miss.

Had such an experience myself this past Monday playing an Adventurers League event via D&D 5E. Both my PC and another PC probably spent one or two rounds attacking a door. And missing.

Now D&D 5E uses pre-3E notions that a to-hit role isn't just to-hit. It's to-hit and do damage. Our attacks may very well have been hitting. They just weren't effective enough to deal damage.

Third Edition/Pathfinder may have set the DC to hit at 10. There's a good chance your missing; and third had contact rules.

As does Shadowrun and old WOD. Don't score a success and you miss. Speaking of old WoD, or at least old MET Laws of (splat), I lost track of the number of times there were simple tasks failing because the storyteller went 'nah throw me chops.' Since a PC is firing a weapon, many GMs would feel justified even as something as simple as door. Same applies toward a sitting individual.

Heck, it's 2017. Thirty years of the West End Games Star Wars RPG. The WEG Star Wars game codified much of present day Star Wars lore. Using those rules as an example, there's two ways Greedo missed both involving the wild die. If you rolled a one, two things could happen. One, you subtract the wild die and the die with highest result from your total. If Greedo's player rolled low enough without those two die results included within the total such that the target number wasn't reached, failure.

The other possibility of a one on the wild die is you fail spectacular fashion. Missing someone sitting across from you would count as failing spectacularly. If WEG hadn't predated the Special Editions by a decade, I would say Greedo missing inspired the wild die...

Also, practically every table-top RPG has rules for critically missing where an attack automatically fails.

So there you have it. Greedo missing Han from across the table was just a bad roll. Rather surprised it took me so long to think of this...

Next Time.
