DC's New Subscription Service Looks Promising

When the news broke over DC starting its own streaming service, I was favorably inclined but leery about paying for another streaming service. The DC fanboy in me was excited at the prospect. However, I don't keep up with Hulu, Netflix, WWE Network, and regular TV. Heck, Britbox and GFW/TNA/Impact/whatever they're calling themselves now are on my radar too. DC's new streaming service's offerings would need to be deep.


New programming I can't get elsewhere.


Old programming I'd really need to scrounge for.


Today, I details and teaser trailer for the new subscription service have been unveiled. Bleeding Cool News reported some details here.


Heck, DC released a teaser trailer for the new DC Universe subscription service as well here.


Titans, Doom Patrol, the next season of Young Justice definitely checks the box for new programming.


Is Swamp Thing a new iteration or the old show?


Snippets from the animated movies, old movies like Supergirl, and the short-lived TV show Constantine certainly satisfy the old material criteria. Okay, okay, Constantine is available on CW Seed. I'm excited for the potential such older shows such as the 90's Flash and Superboy could become available as well. Rights pending of course....


All that? A Hulu-like price is reasonable.


A community forum is a nice touch. How many use message boards nowadays with social media though?


Being able to read older DC Comics. What do we have here now... Depending on the depth and size of the selection this could very well be a DC Digital Comics Unlimited tacked onto streaming service. Although I suppose even if it's limited to more recent offerings along with evergreen stories it wouldn't be so bad.


If DC Universe is *cough* universal in scope and demonstrates signs of expansion with the new content over time ala the WWE Network, I would be willing to pay WWE Network prices.


Verdict: The DC Universe Subscription is mighty tempting. Think I will sign up for the Beta in August.

Halloween 2017: All Hallows' Eve

Might as well cut to the chase:


Happy Halloween!


Must confess I didn't do too much Halloween-related today. Not trick-or-treating. Didn't eat any candy. Was going to read the DC House of Horror one-shot after watching tonight's episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow set during Halloween but after fast-forwarding through the episode (yeah, I know shouldn't do that) I discovered next week's episode is set during the Victorian era and may feature vampires. So I figured I will watch that episode later.


As for the DC comic, I may read it tomorrow. Speaking of comics, while I didn't attend Halloween Comicfest, I did pick up some of the comics when I played Shadowrun Missions yesterday. They are: The Friendly Ghost Casper, Donald Duck's Halloween Scream, Shiver, Ghostbusters: Happy Halloween, and Hellboy and the BPRD 1953 The Witch Tree and Rawhead and Bloody Bones. With any luck, I'll be able to spend a huge chunk of Halloween day 2 (ie All Saints Day) reading comics!


What I did do was take advantage of One Book Shelf's Halloween sales and bundles. Discovered that the Barovia modules for Adventurers League (AL04) were cheaper via the bundle (@ 40% off) and thus the better option. While I was at it, I picked up the Mummy: the Curse (nWOD) bundle and a Monster comics bundle (has the Doctor Mirage trade from Valiant). Then I realized I could pick up the core book and all five supplements for Palladium Book's Dead Reign much cheaper than normal. For those unfamiliar with Dead Reign, it is Palladium Book's post-zombie apocalypse setting. While I already own a copy of the core book, I don't have easy access to it and watching The Walking Dead puts me in a zombie apocalypse mood. Don't know if I would ever run it though.

Halloween '17: A Trio of Halloween Links

Been awhile since I last shared some links I found interesting via this blog. As Halloween rapidly approaches, here is trio of links that I felt had a Halloween flavor.


Death and the dead are huge theme of Halloween. You can't swing a stick among Halloween decorations without hitting depictions of graveyards, headstones, and skeletons. One can say Halloween is a holiday during which we grapple with a destination that awaits us all: the grave. However, not all cultures practice the same funeral rites and interact with the dead in the same manner. Here's a National Geographic ARTICLE in which a mortician is interviewed to discuss various funeral rites such as a mummified family member residing in one's home to composting the dead. Very fascinating. Could probably spice up one's tabletop role-playing game too!


Last couple Halloweens, I've mentioned folklore such as the draugr among others. I found this list of creatures from POLISH folklore interesting. The Północnica gives off a Freddy Krueger-like vibe. Nothing more terrifying than a monster that kills us in our dreams. That's just one among a handful. As someone who has game mastered, there's quite a bit here!


Seeing how this is a comics and games blog, I would be remiss not to include something that actually has bearing on an actual game. Polish, and Slavic, folklore permeates the Witcher videogame series. HERE'S how a ghost story from a Polish poem influenced a scene from the Witcher 3. Video games are truly an excellent means to spread stories and cultural elements among other cultures.

Classic D&D modules return! - Tales of the Yawning Portal whetting your appetite for classic Dungeons & Dragons modules? The classic modules not enough but want 5E stats as well? Well, if you checked out the link, Goodman and WotC are collaborating to do exactly that in glorious hardcover editions. Really hope these are available at FLGCS everywhere because I want 'em!


Marvel's Generations - Okay, the concept of Marvel's Generations has me intrigued - 10 rookie heroes partnered (somehow) with the hero that inspired them has the potential to be a groundbreaking work. Would be cool if Alex Ross provided the art but don't think that will happen. Don't think any resurrections (Logan, Bruce, Mar-Vell) will occur or last but I may be wrong. As Secret Empire will be raging, I may wait for the trade instead. Although, my attitude toward the series may change by then...


Shutter lens Spidey-eyes! - There will be limited number of emotive shutter lenses for a Spider-Man mask for any cosplay based on the CA: Civil War movie costume! Pretty cool to see them work. Would be cool if more were made in the future.


On the chances of MCU crossovers - Alas, it took the actor of the Falcon to point out explicitly why we haven't seen crossovers between the Marvel television series and films: they are different divisions. Rather sad that none of the heads of both departments could not be a frank with fans. Maybe we'll get an Agents of SHIELD/Inhumans/Defenders crossover someday?


Deadpool 2 Teaser - Did you see the movie Logan? Remember the Deadpool 2 teaser? Thought that it was just for fun and whet one's appetite? Well, you're correct.


100 episodes of The Walking Dead! - When The Walking Dead premiered, I didn't think the show would reach 100 episodes. As I am a couple seasons behind, I didn't know the series will soon reach such a milestone! Like the article writer suggests I bet the next arc is "All Out War!" Would be cool if the show ran another 100 episodes though.


Disney Afternoon 8-bit games return! - I grew up watching the Disney Afternoon block. The NES game DuckTales is one of those games I always wanted to play but never played enough of. As such I eagerly anticipate having the chance to play the DuckTales, Chip 'N' Dale's Rescue Rangers, and Talespin 8-bit games on my PC!


Christian-Angle-Dory Funk Jr-Jeff Hardy - Here's a nice little picture of wrestling history showing Kurt Angle, Christian, and Jeff Hardy being trained by the legendary Dory Funk Jr.


Frank Oz on ABC Muppets Failure - I stopped watching the latest iteration of The Muppets because it felt... off.  The mockumentary format just didn't click for me. In that, I agree with Frank Oz. As for "purity", I had no problem with the adult tones. The muppets weren't very likeable though.


Warpath or Thunderbird on X-men the show? - Well, it seems either John or James Proudstar (aka Thunderbird and Warpath) may be in the upcoming X-men television show. That would be cool although I am concerned about the use of the name 'Sam'. I suppose I would also prefer James (aka Thunderbird II/Warpath) to be the Proudstar in question as I can more easily see him leading such an underground group. Plus think of the eventual comic book tie-ins...


Jean Grey Deleted Scene - There will apparently be a deleted scene in the Logan blu-ray referencing Jean Grey.


Hugh Jackman and Wolverine Mask - Haha! Here's a humorous picture of Hugh Jackman holding a Wolverine mask.

My Thoughts on Comic Book and Misc News of January 2017 Part One

My look at how quickly time flies. Was the beginning of the month since I last blogged. Plus I never did write my final installment of my 12ish Days of Blogging! As usual, life and burnout happens. After a couple days past the sixth, I decided my official final chapter just wasn't to be. Fret not the promised review is still forthcoming. In the meantime, I decided to get back in the swing of things with commentary on various news tidbits in the world of comic books and maybe some genre and RPG stuff too.


Sworn into office holding Captain America's shield - An elected official sworn into office holding Captain America's shield! Very, very cool. Politics can be quite heavy so some levity is always nice one in awhile.


Actual X-Men in upcoming X-Men Show - If there was one disappointing strike against Marvel's Agents of SHIELD show was that appearances from the characters that appeared in the movies turned out be much, much rarer than many expected. So kudos to those behind the upcoming X-men television series from FOX announcing actual X-Men will appear in the show. They're just coy about whom. Okay, fine. As long as the show doesn't wait until Episode 6 for Maggot to appear...


Avengers Project - Upcoming Marvel games courtesy of Square Ennix? Cool. I'd comment more but I, er, couldn't get the video to load...


Did Princess Leia's mission change? - Must confess I was too busy fan-boying at Leia's appearance in Rogue One to be bothered by the inconsistency in her mission. Here's the reason for the change or if you want to take the long path the novelization explains as well.


Uh, oh Game of Thrones cast getting into trouble - While filming for seventh season of Game of Thrones, the cast and crew got into trouble for not having any off-road permits for filming in Iceland. Who says there isn't bureaucracy north of the Wall?


MET: Werewolf Errata - By Night Studios released a shiny version of Werewolf for Live-Action Role-play. As is the case in the gaming industry nowadays, here's the errata. Did pick up a copy of the ebook recently so I'll comment more on that and the recent errata once I get around to writing a review...


Starlin has earned more in royalties for KGBeast?! - Recently, comics creator Jim Starlin, creator of Thanos, Drax, and Gamora, announced he's earned more on royalties from KGBeast than his Marvel creations. Say what?! KGBeast was in Batman vs Superman?! Guess, it was a minor appearance in his civilian identity. Don't recall it being a big part so that says much about how much in royalties Marvel pays creators from its films. Maybe they'll cut Starlin a bigger check seeing how several upcoming movies (GotG 2 and the two Avengers Infinity War films) owe a huge debt to him...

Thoughts on Comic Book-ish News the Week of Aug 5, 2016

Had a blast composing my thoughts about some of the revelations that came out of SDCC 2016. My inner geek enjoyed fan-boying over the latest developments. So much so, that I realized that as much as I follow the news in the comic book industry, I rarely comment here. After all, what comic book fan doesn't like to rant/rave about the latest news within the comic book world? Don't know if this will be a one-off or become a new regular feature; but here's my thoughts on some of the latest developments in the world of comics of the week of August 5th, 2016. Links are provided, of course.


Season One vs Season Two of DC's Legends of Tomorrow: Legends had it's problems with Season One. At the link HERE, the producers explain why that was so as well as lessons learned. Good job of explaining why the show felt off. In many ways, Legends of Tomorrow was like a D&D campaign covering the Lord of the Rings except instead of taking a more efficient route chose a path that made the all shenanigans taking the One Ring to Mordor look speedy and professional. So the Legends are more like the D&D party that barely pursues the campaign goal while getting themselves into a ton of trouble. Cool. Glad I don't have to worry about Flashpoint in Flash messing up this show - and by extension Arrow. Absolute love that Season Two will have a generational contrast with the Legends being the Millenials and the Justice Society being the Greatest Generation. Heck, I'm just glad the Justice Society will go back to their WWII roots, which is something missing from the New 52/DC You/Rebirth comics. Plus the one-off episodes shouldn't be as infuriating either as the team isn't pursuing a definable mission with a definable end goal.


When Tony met Riri: Huh? No wonder no copy of Invicible Iron Man #12 was on the rack when I went to my comic shop Wednesday! A major milestone occurred! For those, like me, who didn't get the issue as many comic shops probably experienced unexpectedly high demand, details at this link.  Couple major moments here. Depending how Marvel Now the sequel goes, both this segment and one other may very well earn spots in Top Panels contests for years to come.


Why No Marvel's Mosted Wanted?: As a fan of Marvel's Agents of Shield, I was disappointed that Marvel's Most Wanted was passed on by ABC. Now, we know why. You can read why HERE. Sadly, as with many passed-over shows, ABC didn't like the pilot. Disappointing.  However, apparently, Marvel can shop the show elsewhere. Won't hold my breath though...


Never Say Never to More Peggy Carter: I'm quite happy that actress Hayley Atwell is more than willing to reprise the role of spy Agent Peggy Carter. Kind of like another actor for another famous spy role, she's never saying never albeit without the 'again' part. For the time being, I'll just have to check out her show Conviction. Since I mentioned Flashpoint: While the time-hoppers of Legends won't be affected by Flashpoint, it appears Flashpoint won't last the entire season of Flash either. Here's a link.  What a sigh of relief! Don't think they could stretch the story arc of Flashpoint for 22 episodes and maintain a high-quality throughout. Wonder what the permanent changes will be?


Lucas loves the Marvel Han Solo comic: 'Nuff said. Simply incredible! The creative team should be proud. Here's the scoop.


Cap creators receive their due on the Cap statue: Absolutely love that a Captain America statue has been erected. Absolutely ecstatic that his creators, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, are being credited on the statue itself. Simply fantastic. The power of a petition. You can read the story HERE.


First Look at the Justice Society of America's Logo: In other Legend's of Tomorrow news, the logo of Justice Society was unveiled. Very elegant indeed. You can look at it HERE.


Riverdale Cast/Creators on the show's Twin Peak's tone: First, here's the INTERVIEW. I admit I was leery over the changes to the Archie canon for the show Riverdale. After reading this, I feel much better. Changes make sense. And it is just one universe within the multiverse that is Archie. Besides, Sacasa's work is top-notch; and I did grow up watching 90210 so Luke Perry's casting fits the CW aspect of the show...


JMS leaves comics - In somber news, writer JMS is leaving comics. Sad news indeed as I loved his work. Was wondering why his output had diminished. He had developed vision problems. You can read more at this LINK. I wish him the best of luck becoming a novelist and playwright.

Open Source Animation Dawns and RIP DC You, Meet DC Rebirth

Within the last couple months, two major announcements were made in the comics and animation industry. One, Studio Ghibli's animation software will become open source. The other is that DC's DC You initiative ends to be replaced by Rebirth. Just recently, DC released some teasers pertaining to its Rebirth event.


The announcement that Studio Ghibli's animation software becoming open source is major news. You can read an article discussing the news announcement here. Granted, there a premium version of Toonz will be marketed towards professionals. However, I believe an open source version of Toonz will be great for animation, animation studios, and aspiring animators. More people will be able try their hands at animation and develop their craft. Small studios can operate on lower overhead. More animators and more studios equates to more creators producing more animation. A brand new era of animation may be upon us.


Meanwhile a month ago, DC announced that it is ending its DC You publishing initiative and replaces it with the line-wide Rebirth. You can read the initial coverage here. I absolutely love that the price point will once again be $2.99. Lack of consistency in price points did cause headaches from a sticker shock point of view. Plus is a Superman comic really worth a dollar more than a Hellblazer comic?


While we don't know who the creators will be, the diverse nature of the Rebirth line pales in comparison of DC You. Heck, the New 52 line wide event blows the offerings of Rebirth out of the water. Rebirth seems confined to the Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Justice League, and Titans mythos. Earth 2, Blue Beetle, Suicide Squad and John Constantine are the only titles that break that hold. Perhaps only Justice League and Titans titles made DC's market requirements? I don't know. I am reminded of the DC Explosion and DC Implosion market occurrence. So I am saddened by that. I certainly have plenty of fodder for my Cancelled/On the Bubble feature as every title but Action Comics and Detective Comics is being restarted - and thus ending. I do like how both Action and Detective resume their original numbering. That tickles my nostalgia and historic fancy.


The Rebirth one-shot debuting in May reminds me of the Countdown one shot that pre-saged Infinite Crisis. Remains to be seen whether Rebirth will match that endeavor. Will certainly purchase that along with each of the Rebirth one-shots. I hope that the creative teams match with the creative teams of the respective on-goings. One reason I jumped on the DC You bandwagon was the 8-pages stories that provided a sample of the feel of the new offerings. Would be nice if the Rebirth one-shots matches that endeavor. Speaking of the DC You sample stories, I never got around to reviewing them as I simply couldn't match the pace. By the time I was ready to review the sample stories, the actual comics had hit the stands! So that's something I may remedy in the future.


I'm rather lukewarm to twice-a-month shipping titles. Monthly titles are almost too frequent for me to keep up with. By the time DC You ended, I had started collecting all the New 52 Justice Leaguer solo titles sans Cyborg. Since all of those titles will now ship two times a month, I may end that collecting endeavor. I will probably gravitate towards the once-a-month books. Then again, who knows? I bought much more Marvel ANAD titles than I thought I would.


Recently, DC released nine-second teaser trailers for Rebirth - go here if you want to watch them and read the explanations. Not going to lie if CBR hadn't provided stills the trailer moves too fast for me to see the characters. I am rather excited that DC found a way to incorporate the Bob Haney Super-Sons concept into mainstream continuity. Haven't kept up with Johns's Justice League so the Power Ring revelation as a GL doesn't excite me one or the other. With the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, the Harley Quinn and Killer Croc teaser seems a given. So one 'yay', a maybe, and a 'meh'.

Great Caesar's Ghost! Superman is a Leap Year Baby!

You can thank social media for this discovery but I never that Superman's declared birthday is February 29th. This article here includes background details of the event as well as sample pages from the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons story, "For the Man Who has Everything" and John Byrne page from an uncredited story. A link for 40% discount on select Superman e-books for is also included. However, I have discovered that other e-book retailers are participating in the sale as well so one has options for where one can purchase the little over a handful of trades being offered for discount for today. Keep in mind, the sale is only for 2/29/2016 only.


Why does Superman declare his birthday is on a leap year? From a publication standpoint, I conjecture its because editors Mort Weisinger and Julius Schwartz did not have to contend with publishing content on an annual basis nor have to address thousands of annual correspondence from Superman's young fans on Superman's birthday. Superman probably uses February 29th as a birthday to both distract others from his secret identity as Clark Kent, who has a different birthday, and so that he would not have to bother with it every year. Furthermore, the post-Crisis and pre-New 52 Superman utilized a PO Box and would collect his mail once every year. Not celebrating a birthday every year probably cuts down on birthday cards.


As for the ebooks themselves, several attract my eye particular the trades collecting the Curt Swan and George Perez stories. The New Krypton and Grounded stories were stories that I decided to wait for the trade but never purchased. Well, I believe anyway. I already own Power Couple and, I believe, Escape from Bizarro World. Digital Comics are still hit and miss for me as I still prefer dead-tree copies. So I may range from buying a couple to all but a couple to none at all. Perhaps I'll reference the story as Superman Birthday Review when I finally review it?


In any case, Happy Birthday Superman! Until next time in 2020.

Newsarama has reported that the Spider-Man newspaper strip has revived the Peter/MJ marriage. As someone whom started seriously collecting comics with a married Peter Parker that means a lot to me. Don't get me wrong I am enjoying the Brand New Day era in Amazing Spider-Man. Its that I am glad that the idea of a married Spider-Man isn't seen as a dead end across all Spider-Man venues.

While reading the article I found out that one can read the Spider-Man newspaper strip over at Spider Man Crawl Space. So if one's newspaper doesn't carry the strip that is another source in addition to DailyInk.

Interesting News: New UFC Champ ( I think?)

I normally don't watch the UFC. However, I have been slightly interested in watching it at least. Today, I happened to stumble over an airing right around the main event. If it wasn't for the fact that Brock Lesnar was involved in that match I probably would have continued channel surfing. I'm a huge wrestling fan so I decided to watch the match to see whether or not Lesnar would win against Randy Couture (sp?). As a wrestling fan, I have mixed views on Lesnar. On one hand, I'm glad he's gone from wrestling. On the other hand, he's charismatic enough that I root for the guy. With that in mind, I watched the match. Brock Lesnar won and is now the champ. I think so anyway. Its possible the match was a rerun. Like I said I normally don't watch UFC.

As for UFC and MMA, I am ambivalent. I understand the appeal and may like some day. On the other hand, its like watching two people fight in a school yard. I suspect that I have grown accostumed to some aspects of sports entertainment that I can't truly appreciate a more sports-oriented event. Then again, other than pro wrestling I don't watch sports.

One site of interest to me is ScienceDaily. On occasion, I peruse the site to discover cool new science news. Today, one of the headlines is about a material that may be able to improve gas mileage. You can read about it here.

Granted, more research is needed before we'll see such material used in a tailpipe.
